Find out what is required for housing your new pet, feeding and general care and attention.
Also remember your pet will need looking after when you go on holiday.
Hamsters :-
Remember hamsters are short sighted and get to know you by sound and smell, they need time to get to know their new owner before being handled regularly.
Cages need to cleaned out regularly to prevent bacteria build up, which can cause wet tail. They should have clean shavings a safe bedding material and fresh water.
Hamsters are gnawing animals and like things in their cage to chew on, which help to keep their teeth short and in better condition.
Budgerigars and cockatiels :-
When first purchased need time to settle into their new home, talk to your new pet and get him hand tame before letting him out of the cage for exercise.
A good seed mix and fresh water should always be available, they like various food treats and a little fresh vegetable and fruit.
Goldfish :-
Never use water directly from a tap, it must be at room temperature. Use a water conditioner or leave to stand at least 48 hours before adding your fish, or topping up.
Do not overcrowd the tank. Feed sparingly once or twice a day, what the fish can eat in 2 to 3 minutes.
Do part water changes regularly, rather than complete changes, as this can shock your fish.
Check water pH. At regular intervals, try and keep neutral at 7.
If your tank has living plants it should be illuminated for about 7 to 8 hours a day to keep your plants healthy.
Avoid putting your tank to near a window, or in direct sunlight as this will make it more difficult to control the light and heat to your tank.
Tropical fish :-
When setting up a new tank leave to settle for about 1 week before adding fish or plants, this allows for any adjustments to temperature settings and for the water to start it’s maturing process, you should still use a water conditioner.
Do not overcrowd the tank and do not put all your fish in at the same time, feed sparingly once or twice a day, what the fish can eat in 2 or 3 minutes.
Clean out filters and do a part water change at 3 to 4 week intervals. Always make sure new water is conditioned and at the same temperature as the water in your fish tank, check water pH. And nitrite levels at regular interval.
