My first guinea pig :- If you are looking for the perfect pet for a small child or for an adult who has never kept a pet before then the guinea pig may be just what you are looking for.
Guinea pigs are native to South America and still found wild in the grasslands and mountains of Peru, Argentina and Uruguay.
They were introduced to Europe in the early sixteenth century and were quite rare and valuable. It is thought the name guinea pig comes from the fact that these animals were sold for one guinea.
Which to choose? :- There are many breeds of guinea pigs in many different colours and they can be short-haired, rough-coated, smooth or long-coated.
When choosing which guinea pig is best for you remember that the long-haired breeds will require daily combing to prevent the hair
Becoming tangled or matted.
Boy or girl, one or two? :- Female guinea pigs are known as sows and males as boars and both make excellent pets.
However. As guinea pigs are pack animals. Which means you really should keep more than one. The choice of sex is very important.
Obviously, keeping a sow and a boar together is not recommended, as you will soon have lots of babies running around.
You could have as many sows as you have room for but if you choose to keep boars, it’s probably best to stick to two as more than that will not get on well together
A new home :- Guinea pigs can live indoors or outdoors. If you choose to keep your new pet outside he will need a weatherproof hutch. This needs to be in a sheltered position and in cold weather you will need to move the hutch into a garage or shed and cover it with a blanket to keep your pet warm.
Make sure the wire mesh is small enough so mice cannot get into the cage and it also needs to be raised off the ground to prevent cats taking
too much of an interest.
Living indoors :- Guinea pigs that live indoors will need a special guinea pig pen available from your pet shop.
The bigger the better, but the pen should be at least 70x45cm (28x18in) and 45cm (l8in) high for housing two guinea pigs.
Sawdust or wood shavings on the floor will act as an absorbent layer and you will also need to provide hay both for eating and bedding. The pen also needs to be equipped with a water bottle and a food dish.
Your guinea pigs will also like to run about so let them out for a run each evening making sure all electrical wires are out of the way. If you are keeping the guinea pigs outdoors a moveable wire mesh run is a good idea.
What’s on the menu? :- There are many specially produced guinea pig feeds on the market, but for a special treat and to keep their diet varied you can supplement this with fresh fruit or vegetables.
Guinea pigs often have personal taste when it comes to which foods they like but try offering carrot, melon, beetroot, cauliflower greens, cabbage or tomato.
Corn on the cob is especially good as gnawing on the cob helps keep guinea pigs’ teeth healthy.
Watch out :- There are a few things to watch though: spinach can upset some guinea pigs’ digestive systems, similarly the acid from apples can damage their lips leading to infection.
Your guinea pig will need to be fed at a set time each day. Ideally, feed some greens in the morning then top up the dry feed bowl and offer some fruit or vegetable in the evening.
Remember to make sure there is a constant supply of fresh water and that any uneaten vegetable or fruit is removed after a couple of hours to avoid it rotting, which can leave nasty smells and may cause your guinea pig to have stomach upsets.
