Rats as pets :-
Inquisitive, sociable and affectionate, domestic rats make good pets for adults and children alike
Long gone are the days when rats were solely viewed as disease-carrying vermin and now many varieties of domestic rats are kept as pets.
Descended from the wild brown rat, Rattus norvegicus, domestic rats have been bred for their looks and temperament.
Think first, buy later :-
When you think about buying a rat, consider whether you can give enough time to playing with your pet every day for up to three years — the average life span of a rat.
In addition, you should really think about keeping more than one, as rats are very sociable creatures. Same sex groupings are best if you don’t want a population explosion!
When you buy your rats, make sure that they are over six weeks old and confident with people. This will show that they have been handled regularly and will make good pets.
Happy homes :-
To give your rat a good home, you will need to provide a cage that is at least 60cm long be 30cm wide — it can never by too big!
Wire cages are best, as they allow rats to climb giving an extra dimension to their home. A warm nest box will give your pets somewhere to retreat to this can be anything from something designed especially for the purpose from your pet shop to an old flowerpot or empty cardboard box.
The floor of the cage should be covered in a substrate many rat fanciers recommend newspaper-based cat litters.
For bedding, use shredded paper bedding, or provide paper towels that the rats can shred themselves.
Rat repasts :-
Rats are omnivores — they like a bit of everything. Well balanced specially formulated diets are available from your pet shop, some as coarse mixes and some as pellets.
Supplement the diet with healthy fresh treats such as fruit and vegetables. Specially made treats can also be bought, but try not to give them too often or your pets will get fat.
Fresh water must be available at all times, preferably in a gravity-fed water bottle.
Making life more enjoyable :-
As intelligent animals, rats need to be stimulated or they will become bored and unhappy.
Toys aimed at ferrets or parrots are suitable for rats, but many household objects are also viewed as playthings — try old socks, cardboard boxes and drainpipes to start off with.
You can make extra levels in the cage by adding wipe-clean pieces of melamine board. Knotted ropes are good for climbing too.
Rat hammocks are fun as well. Make one by attaching all Four Corners of a square of material (towelling is good) to the roof of the cage.
Although they may be wary at first, your rats’ curiosity will soon get the better of them
